Yahoo!, switches from neighborhood and street addresses Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) for homesteaders to "vanity" URLs through members' registration names to Yahoo! thereby destroying all the charm of owning a GeoCities site.

Yahoo takes full control of GeoCities, marking the beginning of the end. Yahoo! introduces a draconian new Terms of Service stating that the company owned all rights and content of its users, including media such as pictures. While some users begin quiting, others stripped their homepages of color and content, replacing blinking GIFs with excerpts of the offending Terms of Service in a protest that became known as the Haunting.
